? Data experts for OWL – AI Marketplace and AI Living Lab host joint datathon
“Turning data into gold” – this is the credo of an industrial datathon , which is jointly organized by the AI Marketplace and the AI Living Lab. From 19-21.05.2021 creative and dedicated hackers, data analysts and data scientists from universities, research institutions, companies and start-ups can solve real challenges from industry. Over two days, the goal is to develop solutions and get the prize – an implementation project in the AI Livinig Labwith a project volume of 10,000 euros.
“For düspohl, this Datathon is a special opportunity to get valuable input for possible solutions to master today’s challenges with the help of production data. So much concentrated brainpower, as it comes together at the , will also bring significant added value for us,” Uwe Wagner, Managing Director of düspohl Maschinenbau, is pleased to say. Düspohl Maschinenbau is a challenger to the datathon. At its site in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, the company manufactures profile wrapping and laminating lines for international customers in the wood and plastics industries. In the industry, düspohl is known for its innovative solutions and pioneering work on automating the process.
Solving data-driven challenges in teams
Solving data-related IT problems mostly collaboratively in a competition – that’s the idea of a datathon. The term is a specialization of ‘hackathon’. On the one hand, the name establishes the connection to the datathon and, with the ‘COMP’, refers to a programming language command. In the , participants work online in teams for three days on data-driven solutions for real challenges from the business world. “For this, we are looking for creative and committed minds from business and academia to work together to unlock the potential of data science for companies in specific use cases,” says Nissrin Perez, research associate at Fraunhofer IOSB-INA.
The best solution ideas will be selected and the winning team will receive an exciting prize – an implementation project in the AI Living Lab at SmartFactoryOWL in Lemgo. Entitled to carry out the implementation project, which is endowed with €10,000, are companies, start-ups or research institutions that were selected by the jury with the best result at the hackathon.
AI initiatives for OWL
The AI Marketplace and the AI Living Lab are two strategic initiatives of the leading-edge cluster it’s OWL. Both projects are driven by the topic of artificial intelligence, but pursue different thrusts: The AI Marketplace is about tapping the potential of AI in the area of product creation. The AI Living Lab focuses on downstream processes of product creation such as production, operation or service. This results in numerous synergies: for example, recommendations from potential analyses of the AI Marketplace can be transferred by companies into implementation projects in the AI real lab. At the same time, real data from the AI Living Lab can be fed back to the AI Marketplace platform. “We see great added value for the economy in OWL in these two initiatives,” says Günter Korder, Managing Director of it’s OWL. “The offerings and services of AI Marketplace as well as the AI Living Lab cover the entire value chain and thus offer companies a wide range of services for the digitalization of their value creation. The is a building block in this.”
The hackathon is also supported by the AICommunityOWL, which held the AI Challenge Days several times last year and organizes and supports activities around AI in OWL. The AI Living Lab and the AI Marketplace are funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy.
